Keep it Up!

“And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.”

Luke 18:1

There’s something I’ve been praying for over the past 6-years. It takes discipline to continue after this many years with just enough pieces of the whole answered to keep me going, knowing that God has not closed the door, but that He’s slowly revealing something amazing. It’s easy to lose heart, to lose your spiritual stamina. So whatever it is you are praying for… keep praying! Don’t just pray once and move on. Keep at it. Cultivate it as a discipline in your life. God will reveal His will and encourage you along the way.

Humble Yourself

“But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’

Luke 18:13

For some who have been extremely active in the church, human nature can sometimes cause them to become haughty. Placing yourself in a spiritually elevated position over others is anything but humble. God requires a humble heart and a child-like faith. Our prayers should be honest and simple for He honors those who honor Him.

Fertile Ground

But when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

1 Corinthians 13:10

Many times when we pray for things God requires us to wait. The reasons may vary: We need to grow in our faith, if He does this for you now it will end in calamity, or there may be some tree trimming He needs to do. It’s frustrating to wait and not to be sure what God’s will is, but rest assured, when He brings things into completion it will be at the perfect time and it will be on firm, fertile ground.

At Odds with the World

You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.

James 4:4

As soon as you turn on the news or open a paper, it’s obvious, our world has moved far away from God. In the book of Judges, God is grieved, as Israel has done just what he warned them not to, assimilated with the locals. They chose to accept their customs and rituals, moving God to that background. We see that in our culture today. To fill churches, we see pastors bending to worldly popularity rather than holding to the hard truths of God’s word.

If we are not at odds with our culture, we are at odds with God.

On Loan…

Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.

Psalm 127:3

My wife and I tried for nearly four years to have a child. As time went by and friends posted photos of their baby bellies and newborns, it was torture for my wife as she felt her time for having a child was slowly passing her by. Her first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage and the torture continued. Then, nearly three and a half years ago, she conceived again. Considered high-risk, we spent the entire pregnancy in continuous doctors visits, ultrasounds, and hospital stays. We now have a healthy and beautiful little girl, and she is thankfully on loan to us from our Creator. Life is precious, she embodies that fact daily and we are thankful God rewarded us with her!

Jesus Intercedes

Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.

Hebrews 7:25

This is an amazing truth for all who follow Jesus, He lives forever to intercede for us! It’s easy to fall into a pattern of self-loathing when you fail. You can feel as if you’re an utter failure in God’s sight. But Jesus is our go-between, God sees us through Christ’s loving eyes. Self-loathing is a trick of the Devil, ask for forgiveness and forgive yourself. God does!

At a Loss for Words?

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

Galatians 4:6

There will be times throughout your life where you are at a loss for words. You may feel so broken that you don’t even know how or what to pray for. God can feel and translate our anguished groans through the Holy Spirit indwelling each of us. When life has you grasping for the right words, be still, sometimes our most powerful prayers are conveyed through heartfelt emotion.
