Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
As Christians, the main thing we are to be is good servants. Being a servant turns the world on it’s head; being a servant is seen as being the lowest of the low. Christ demonstrates this perfectly as he serves his disciples. This act must have thrown them. Their teacher, the man who performed so many miracles, washing their feet? This was an intimate act. Jesus, as a man, had become close to these men, they were his friends. Showing his great love for them and also showing them how serving is not reserved for the lowly, shows us what it is to truly follow Him.
