DAILY VERSE

Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
– Luke 2:8-14
DEVOTION
One of my favorite Christmas shows is “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. As kid I loved “Peanuts”, but it was the bold proclamation by Linus, that the true meaning of Christmas were these verses. In the midst of Christmas trees and Christmas lights, the over merchandising that happens at this time of year; the true meaning of Christmas is simply Jesus. Christmas is a love story, lived out by God who loves us more than we can comprehend.
Merry Christmas!

DAILY VERSE

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

– Isaiah 9:6-7

DEVOTION

For “to us” is born… Jesus was sent for “us”, to reach out from heaven and give us a taste of the righteousness and love of God. To walk among us as a living, breathing example of God’s mercy and an example of how we should live. We will never attain a sin-free life, but we can shoot for the high bar that Jesus set, relying on his guidance and strength.

DAILY VERSE

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

– Isaiah 7:14

DEVOTION

Throughout the Old Testament we see Jesus Christ foretold of. It speaks to our all-knowing God and his love for mankind. Jesus wasn’t a second thought, he was in God’s plan the whole time. God’s gift to us is His overwhelming love.

DAILY VERSE
Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but he will be a joy to many others. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”
– Luke 2:34-35
DEVOTION
Jesus Christ came into this world to shake things up. He came to show us what being a humble servant looks like and what true, unconditional love really is. God tried setting laws and examples, but humankind was just to self involved to understand His ways. Because he loved us, He sent his son. His law convicts us, His son saves us. The message is simple.

DAILY VERSE
When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, “You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God’s coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.
Luke 3:7-8
DEVOTION
The priests of the day were the ones Jesus would warn believers of. They were more worried about their status and being “religious” than truly following God. It’s the same thing as going to church and speaking Christianese, when your heart is not fully sold out for Christ. So the same warning stands today; you can’t fool your way into heaven. Your heart must be transformed, you must repent, you must believe that Jesus lived and died for your sins, and you will be humbled.

DAILY VERSE

Be courageous! Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. May the lord’s will be done.

1 Chronicles 19:13

DEVOTION

The Israelites were passionate about their God, they felt His presence and were willing to fight courageously for Him. Key though, is they wanted God’s will. We have to be willing to be courageous for God, but we also have to be okay with His will as well. It’s easy to be excited about God’s will when things go our way, but what about when the answer is “no”, “not yet”, or “later”? Patience and perseverance are character traits of a humble servant.

DAILY VERSE
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”
– 1 John 8-10
DEVOTION
The very minute you do not consider yourself to be a sinner, you better stop and check yourself. We came into this world sinning and we’ll go out the same way. We may get a handle on some of it with God’s help, but we will always need God’s strength, mercy, and forgiveness. Once we stop relying on Him our sinful nature will win.
